ASTROS PURCHASE CONTRACT OF FERNANDEZ
Designate Pete Munro for assignment.

Metairie, LA – The New Orleans Zephyrs, the class AAA Pacific Coast League Affiliate of the Houston Astros are pleased to announce that the Astros have purchased the contract of Zephyrs pitcher Jared Fernandez. To make room on the roster for Fernandez, the Astros have designated pitcher Pete Munro for assignment.

Fernandez, who was signed by the Astros as a free agent in December, was 7-10 with a 3.81 ERA (66ER/156IP) in 26 appearances (23 starts) for the Zephyrs this season. His 156 innings pitched lead the Pacific Coast league. Fernandez also has two complete games on the season. He is scheduled to start Sunday for the Astros against the Florida Marlins. He has a career major league record of 1-4 with a 4.43 ERA (31 ER/50.2 IP) in 19 appearances (10 starts) for the Cincinnati Reds in 2001 and 2002.

Munro was 3-4 with a 4.67 ERA (28 ER/ 54.0 IP) in 40 appearances (2 starts) for the Astros this season. The Astros have 10 days to trade or release Munro, who could re-sign with the Astros if he clears waivers.

The Zephyrs conclude the four game series and 12 game road trip on Friday at 8:05 PM. against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. D.J. Houlton (2-0, 3.16 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Zephyrs and Randy Flores (7-6, 4.33 ERA) for the Sky Sox. The Z’s are 6-5 on the current 12 game road trip.
